Brookside, a twice weekly serial drama, is perhaps best known in the gay world for showing the first lesbian kiss on UK television. It has had a number of lesbian characters including Lindsey Corkhill, Beth Jordache, and Shelley Bowers. In the 2000 season, Beth had relationships with a confused female neighbour, and a lesbian college lecturer, before later dying in prison.
A second lesbian couple, Lindsey and Shelley, were then introduced, with Shelley making a play for her lover's mother(!) while another character, Paula, is Shelley's jealous ex-girlfriend, determined to win her back.
Emmerdale Farm, a serial from Yorkshire TV and set in the Dales, had one of its regular characters, Zoe Tate, come out as a lesbian in June 1993. Two of Zoe's lovers then appeared in many subsequent episodes. Suzie took Zoe away from Emma just as the two were about to get "married", since when Zoe has dated two previously straight women, Sophie and Becky.

Between the Lines, a BBC police drama, features character Maureen `Mo' as one of the main characters. Originally from The Bill. Mo is a lesbian police officer who in the third series acquires a lover named Kate. She was “out” to her partner Tony on the series, but not to her supervisors. She split up with her girlfriend later in the series, and later, back in The Bill seems to be “out” to all.
